A doodle is a hybrid (cross-breed or mixed- breed) from intentionally breeding two purebred canine breeds where one breed is a Standard Poodle. According to history, the first “doodle” was actually bred by the great-granddaughter of Charles Dickens back in 1969! Monica Dickens bred a Golden Retriever with a Standard Poodle to highlight the best of both breeds. The gentleness of the Golden Retriever with the athletic intelligence of the Poodle (the Poodle is considered the 2nd most intelligent dog breed) while also eliminating the heavy shedding issues from Golden Retrievers. By the 1990s, the Goldendoodle breed became a well-known and sought-after “designer breed” in Australia and the United States. They also became popular as therapy and guide dogs.
