But keep reading. ![]() Unfortunately, all dogs shed, even doodles. But the good news is doodles typically shed much less than many other breeds thanks to the inclusion of the low-shedding Poodle in the doodle breed. Just like their owners, all dogs (and cats) naturally shed excess hair that is:
Hair shedding is normal and all part of nature’s way. What does vary is the:
When Shedding Becomes Excessive![]() So, what should you do if your low-shedding dog suddenly starts shedding excessively?
Hypoallergenic vs shedding![]() A common misconception around dog shedding is that dogs who shed very little are considered “hypoallergenic” (or cause fewer allergic reactions). But the Mayo Clinic, cautions “there’s no such thing as a hypoallergenic dog breed, although some individual dogs may cause fewer allergy symptoms than others.” Your pet allergies are actually caused by a protein found in the saliva and urine of both dogs and cats. This protein can find its way to your pet’s fur (and dander) when they lick themselves or urine gets into their fur. While a low-shedding or smaller dog will release less allergy-causing dander than a shedding dog, it is important to understand that no dog is completely hypoallergenic. Natural Remedies to Address K9 SheddingBut there is some good news for those who still want to add a dog to their life! The tips below can help you better co-exist with a canine companion.

According to history, the first “doodle” was actually bred by the great-granddaughter of Charles Dickens back in 1969! Monica Dickens bred a Golden Retriever with a Standard Poodle to highlight the best of both breeds. The gentleness of the Golden Retriever with the athletic intelligence of the Poodle (the Poodle is considered the 2nd most intelligent dog breed) while also eliminating the heavy shedding issues from Golden Retrievers. By the 1990s, the Goldendoodle breed became a well-known and sought-after “designer breed” in Australia and the United States. They also became popular as therapy and guide dogs. One of the first challenges with a new puppy is potty training. Thankfully, crate training can make the housebreaking process easier and less frustrating!
Some people believe crate training a puppy or older dog is inhumane, even cruel. But it is all about how you introduce your puppy to the crate. Crate training should never be used:
- Negatively as a punishment,
- As a long-term “babysitter” or
- When you do not have enough time and patience to properly introduce and crate train.
Crates Equal Modern-Day Dog Dens

Even puppies come with genetic, age-old instincts. One of those instincts is the need for a protected refuge (den) to retreat to for protection from other predators, bad weather, safety and security. Our dog’s wild ancestors also used dens as a safe and clean place for their pups to learn and grow.
Using a crate as a den also makes housebreaking much easier because no dog wants to sleep in the same place they go to the toilet!

Introducing the Crate
In the beginning, let your canine explore the den on his own with the door open. Place his favorite treats or toys inside to encourage him to explore the crate. His natural curiosity will motivate him to explore this new place. In the beginning, do not close the door and lock him inside to avoid scaring him.
Crates and Potty Training
For successful potty-training, make sure your crate is not too big for your puppy. If it is, your puppy will go to the bathroom in one corner and then relax in the opposite corner. The ideal crate is just large enough for your puppy to stand up and turn around. If necessary, use a dividing partition to make part of the crate smaller as you train your puppy to a regular potty schedule.
Remember to stick to a strict schedule of bathroom breaks when housetraining! If necessary, hire a professional to help stay on schedule.

“A puppy can generally control his bladder one hour
for every month of age.”
~ Humane Society ~
Keep in mind, accidents can happen in puppies up to a year old. So be patient and always reward your puppy’s good behavior!
Crates Offers Other Benefits
Remember, crates are safe places for your puppy or dog to be able to retreat to when they need it. Times when:
- They are overwhelmed or stressed by strangers, small children or other pets.
- There is unsupervised food or drinks (that are not dog-friendly).
- There is thunder, fireworks or other loud and frightening noises.
- Your dog needs to heal from an illness, injury or even surgery.

Crates: A Few More Notes

- Always keep your dog’s crate in the room where the family spends the most time to avoid K9 social or isolation issues. All canines are pack animals and look to the pack for safety, security and socialization even in their crate.
- When your puppy seeks out their crate, give them their space. Do not bother them when they are in their “den.”
- Never force your puppy to accept crate training. Always make it a fun game and your puppy will learn to positively view the crate as his special place.

Bringing home a new puppy is exciting!
But, before you bring that sweet furry bundle home, make sure you are ready with this checklist!
By taking the proper time to prepare for your new puppy, you are setting up your puppy – and the family – for success! Keep reading to learn more.
What is the Right Breed for Your Family?
Think about things like size, shedding, sociability, shedding, personality as well as exercise and medical requirements. Honestly assess your family and lifestyle and ensure everyone understands what is involved in the daily routine of feeding, exercising and training the new puppy. Puppies are a lot of fun, but they are also depending upon their new family to fulfill their daily needs.
Choose a Local Vet & Emergency Vet

Regular check-ups and medical care are essential for a happy and healthy dog! Make sure your vet’s phone numbers and addresses are in your phone and mapped in your GPS before an emergency happens!
The Basics!
- Collar + Leash + ID Tag
- Bowls for Food & Water (stainless steel collects fewer bacteria)
- Grooming Supplies:
- Brush
- Dog-friendly Nail Clipper
- Dog-friendly toothbrush/toothpaste
- Ear Wipes
- Dog Shampoo
- Poop Bags
- Car Harness or Travel Crate
- Dog Crate for your Home + Dog Bed, Crate Pad or Blankets
- Baby gates
- Food & Treats (preferably the same as their previous diet)
- Toys; especially durable toys for teething puppies
PUppy-Proof Your Home!

Just like babyproofing is critical, the same is true before you bring home that cute and very curious puppy! Puppies explore – and learn about – their world through their noses and mouths, so keep that in mind when puppy-proofing your home.
Look at your home through the eyes – and height - of a puppy. Use baby gates to block dangerous stairs and the entrance to the kitchen to keep the puppy away from tempting food and trash! Also keep electrical cords and wires, medicines, cleaning supplies, plants, knick-knacks, candles and small toys away from your precious pup to protect them.

Choose a Local Trainer & Puppy Classes

It is never too early to begin training your new puppy! Teaching obedience early establishes a strong foundation of communication, trust and respect between you and your dog.
Training also involves another critical component for puppies, socialization. This involves positive exposures to a variety of people, pets, environments, noises and smells to create a well-adjusted and confident dog without fears, anxieties and unsocial behaviors.
Ask other dog owners, your vet and the breeder or shelter for recommendations for a positive-reinforcement dog trainer in your area. Both you and your puppy should be comfortable with the trainer you choose and excited about training! If this is not the case, find another trainer.
Obtain Pet Insurance

New puppy owners often do not add pet insurance to the list. But it is important to have the right insurance in place for your growing puppy like it is for you and your family.
Each company offers different costs, coverages and pre-existing limitations, so do your research. Again, reach out to other dog owners, vets, and other dog experts for recommendations to obtain the best coverage before your puppy needs it.
